Naval veterans welcome tanker   28.01.03 16:16

Royal Navy veterans in South Africa rolled out the red carpet for a British auxiliary when it paid a visit to the port of Durban.

RFA Grey Rover, officially designated a Small Fleet Tanker of 7,510 tons gross, skippered by Capt Paul Whyte, called in to Durban for a brief visit, audit and repairs.

Her executive officer – Marcus Smith – who is an active member of the RNA in the UK, and understands the importance of meeting with fellow shipmates at home and abroad, and keeping them abreast of the modern Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

The visit was arranged through the liaison officer in Pretoria, and so a party of shipmates from Natal branch toured the ship and had a session of swinging the lamp.

Natal chairman Bill Skinley presented the ship’s officers an RNA Natal plaque, which they have been promised will take pride of place in the wardroom.

The branch would also like to remind any RN or RFA ship which visits Durban to contact the branch so that social events or outings can be arranged.
