Dutch warship calls into Plymouth   26.03.03 13:20

Dutch air defence frigate HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck (F812) has made a three-day visit to Devonport Naval Base.

The visit comes at the end of a three-week exercise programme, and the Commanding Officer, Cdr Ben Bekkering, and the 167-strong ship’s company took full advantage of the break from normal routine.

The ship was commissioned in 1986 as the first of her class and she displaces 3,725 tonnes. She is powered by two pairs of Tyne and Olympus gas turbine engines, and has a top speed of around 30 knots.

HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck is shortly due to join a NATO task group for operations in the Mediterranean.
