Royal Family help mark Korean anniversary   14.07.03 11:18

The Royal Family has helped veterans mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

The Duke of Edinburgh took the salute at a march-past of veterans on Horse Guards Parade, where more than 1,000 ex-Service personnel from the British Korean Veterans Association (BKVA) and other veterans organisations mustered for the ceremonials.

And later Prince Philip was joined by the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Prince Michael of Kent and Princess Alexandra at a service of thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey.

The BKVA arranged for 20 standard bearers to line the route into the Abbey, and the British and Korean flags were marched into the building, along with the BKVA standard.

During the service, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea delivered a message of thanks from his country, and a pipe major played a lament at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, while the Ambassador and Major General Sir Peter Downward of the BKVA laid wreaths of remembrance.

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon and the Chiefs of Staff later hosted a reception for representatives of the BKVA and ambassadors and high commissioners of a number of the countries that sent forces to join the UN contingent in Korea.
