Navy cycling records broken at Inter-Services event   22.09.03 10:58

The 2003 Inter-Services 10 and 25 Mile Time Trial cycling championships, incorporating the Royal Navy championships, saw Royal Navy records set by two different riders.

POPT Sean Childs take both RN and Inter-Services titles in the shorter race, with a new Navy championship record time of 20 minutes 28 seconds.

Sean last won the event in 2001, and was runner-up last year.

Capt Ian Houvenhagel RM was seventh overall but runner-up in the Royal Navy event (21 minutes 06 seconds) and fellow Royal Marine Chris Smart was 11th overall, third in the Navy (21 minutes 47 seconds).

The 25-mile championship saw the two top placings reversed, with Houvenhagel taking the Navy title by finishing fourth overall, also setting a new RN championship record of 54 minutes 41 seconds.

Childs was the next Senior Service rider in, taking sixth place (54 minutes 54 seconds) and Smart ninth overall (third in the Royal Navy) in 56 minutes 05 seconds.

Other notable rides over the two days came from Capt Mark Fieldsend, CPO Vellacott and Sgt Edwards.

One rider not available for the event was CPO Aran Stanton, who was riding in the Open event. Stanton has had an outstanding season, and has broken the majority of the RN Open records over 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles within the past 12 months.
