Distinguished Service Order (DSO):
Col Gordon Kenneth Messenger OBE RM (Col Messenger
commanded 40 Commando RM on Operation Telic, which spearheaded
the amphibious assault on the Al Faw peninsula on the first
night of hostilities, and later overcame Iraqi armoured forces
at Abu Al Khasib).
Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC):
L/Cpl Justin Royston Thomas RM (During an attack
by 40 Cdo on March 30, L/Cpl Thomas' troop was ambushed. L/Cpl
Thomas decided to leave a position of safety to man a machine-gun
on top of a soft-skin vehicle, fully exposed to enemy fire.
For some 15 minutes he engaged the enemy, allowing his comrades
to reach cover, regroup and mount a successful counter-attack.)
Distinguished Service Cross (DSC):
Lt Cdr Philip Charles Ireland RN (Lt Cdr Ireland was the commanding
officer of Hunt-class ship HMS Brocklesby, the first Coalition
mine countermeasures vessel or MCMV to enter difficult, poorly-charted
waters during the mine clearance operation, often working
in bad weather, to clear a route through the Khawr Abd Allah
waterway. This allowed humanitarian supplies to be delivered
to Umm Qasr port.
Military Cross (MC):
Cpl David John Beresford RM (Cpl Beresford was a
section commander with 42 Cdo, and was awarded the Military
Cross for gallantry during several actions, including a firefight
in a mud lagoon); Capt Christopher Edward Haw RM; Capt Paul
Patrick Lynch RM (Capt Lynch commanded the Manoeuvre Support
Group of 40 Cdo during Operation Telic. His troop was in the
first wave of the night assault on the Al Faw peninsula, and
over the following fortnight he demonstrated outstanding leadership
and personal courage in numerous actions with Iraqi forces);

Lt Anthony Richard King (Deceased) RN (Lt King was
killed when two Mk 7 Sea King Airborne Surveillance and Control
helicopters of 849 Naval Air Squadron A Flight collided over
the Gulf. Lt King was awarded a posthumous Mention in Despatches
in recognition of the vital work he carried out in bringing
into service a new electronic system that allowed crucial
radar data to be fed quickly and accurately to the Land Commander.)
