| Sailors providing Britain’s
ultimate deterrent have not been deterred from picking up
new qualifications as their submarine patrols the depths.
Faslane’s Fleet Education Officer (FEDO) Lt Tom Harrison
joined Trident missile ‘bomber’ HMS Victorious
(Starboard) for her final patrol of 2003.
Since the small section of eight FEDOs was formed a little
more than a year ago, the learning officers have visited more
than 40 ships at sea to encourage education and earning new
qualifications to while away the long hours on patrol.
The V-boat’s crew studied a variety of courses and
qualifications, from GCSEs, foreign languages, personal development
and the European Computer Driving Licence – 26 deeps
out of the 36 who sat the ‘driving test’ passed.
“The nature of a deterrent patrol ensures that many
personnel have some spare time to carry out some form of personal
development,” said Lt Harrison.
“As a result of having a FEDO’s help, many of
the sailors will continue their studies during subsequent
spells at sea and ashore.”
The FEDO team says the Navy benefits from better qualified
and motivated personnel, while individual sailors pick up
the skills needed to progress their careers inside and outside
the Service.
“The visits have a positive impact on a submarine’s
operational capability and at the same time improve the morale
and likely retention of a sailor,” Lt Harrison added.
Lt Harrison also stepped off Victorious on her return well
on the way to a new qualification – his submariner’s
dolphin badge.
Senior FEDO Lt Cdr Andrew Griffiths is keen to see his team
visit more submarines. Boats interested in hosting one of
the learning officers should call 9380 20698.
