Crane topples on to aircraft carrier   09.11.04 12:56

Four people suffered minor injures when a crane toppled on to the flight deck of aircraft carrier HMS Invincible.

The large crane, on Sheer Jetty, went over at just after 10am today while attempting to lift a cherry picker crane from the carrier’s flight deck, which is covered with scaffolding and canvas as the deck is being repainted.

There is reported to be little damage to the ship, but three members of the ship’s company suffered cuts and/or shock.

The crane driver was released from his cabin shortly before 11.30am by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and was taken to hospital. The driver, who works for Fleet Support Ltd, is believed to be suffering a head injury.

The incident resulted in some restrictions to shipping movements in the vicinity of the carrier.

A full investigation into the incident will be held.
