A search resumed this morning for a missing a Royal Navy
Lynx helicopter, with four people on board, which disappeared
yesterday evening.
The Lynx had itself been on a search mission after sailors
on a RN frigate in the area, around 15 miles off the Lizard
Peninsula in Cornwall, had reported hearing cries for help
from the water.
The helicopter disappeared from the radar screens at about
7pm yesterday, and failed to respond to subsequent radio
calls.
A Royal Navy spokesman said no mayday was received from
the Lynx.
Several Royal Navy ships, including Type 23 frigates HMS
Montrose and HMS St Albans, are taking part in the search,
with aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious acting as on-scene
commander.
Search and rescue helicopters from RN air station Culdrose,
RAF aircraft and the Falmouth lifeboat were also involved
in the search, and the French Navy have also provided assistance.
Conditions in the area are said to be relatively benign,
and although the water is cold, the air crew will have been
wearing protective clothing.
The Lynx is one of the mainstays of maritime aviation for
the Royal Navy, and the aircraft has for many years provided
the ship’s flight for deployed frigates and destroyers.
