Welcome to the ‘thinking person’s Navy’   10.12.04 11:38

No shouting on the parade ground.

No incessant kit checks.

Has the Royal Navy gone soft in the 21st century? Are its new recruits being wrapped in cotton wool?

Budding mechanic Gemma Dickinson might not agree as she wades through the chilly water of a small harbour on a bitter cold December morning.

She was awake at 5.30am, and will be pushing herself until 10pm, with maybe 45 minutes to herself if she’s lucky.

Welcome to the new regime at initial training establishment HMS Raleigh – and the ‘thinking person’s Navy’.
