HMS Exeter, one of two Royal Navy ships still in commission from the Falklands conflict, arrives in Dundee on Thursday 28 June for a five-day visit.
During her stay, the ship will welcome aboard veterans, civic dignitaries and invited guests, and about 100 of her 230-strong ship’s company will attend a reception on board HM Frigate Unicorn as guests of the City of Dundee Combined Ex-Services Association.
The Type 42 destroyer will come alongside at the King George V Wharf at about 12 noon on Thursday 28 June.
She will be open to visitors on Sunday 1 July from 1pm to 5pm. Commander Gavin Young, her commanding officer, said: “We very much look forward to showing people around the ship and giving them an insight into our lives at sea and the roles of the modern Royal Navy.”
Exeter’s visit has been timed to coincide with the city’s celebration of Veterans’ Day, which officially falls on 27 June every year. The main focus of Exeter’s programme is the Veterans’ Day parade and Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving which will take place on Saturday 30 June.
The commemorations will centre on the 25th anniversary of the end of the Falklands conflict on 14 June 1982..
HMS Exeter is currently taking part in the “Sea Swap” initiative, during which she swaps crews with HMS Edinburgh, allowing her to stay on deployment longer. |
