THE passageways of frigate HMS Somerset are open to allcomers tomorrow and Friday as the ship participates in Dartmouth’s annual Royal Regatta.
The Devonport-based warship has made the short journey from her home to the River Dart, where she moors today as the official guardship for the maritime festival in the shadow of the spiritual home of the Navy’s Officer Corps.
Ferries will run visitors from the Dartmouth shore to the ship, where crew will offer guided tours above and below decks.
“HMS Somerset has just completed her first refit and the ship’s company is delighted to have the chance to show off their newly-refurbished ship,” said CO Cdr Rob Wilson.
“The public will be able to come onboard, take a look around, meet the sailors and get a feeling for life onboard this powerful warship.”
The men and women of HMS Somerset will be taking part in many of the races both on and off the water.
The frigate is also being used to host some of the regatta events and will provide a fitting backdrop to the various flying displays that will include the Royal Navy’s own Black Cats helicopter display team.
The RAF’s Red Arrows will also muscle in on events; they are due to perform in the skies above Dartmouth on Friday.
Somerset will remain on the Dart until after the regatta closes on Saturday evening with a spectacular firework display. |
