not his. If you can help with information contact Eric St.John

Escort Base:
Seeking information about the working up base HMS Western Isles
located at Tobermory on Mull, during World War II. Commanded by
the charismatic Vice-Admiral Sir Gilbert Stephenson (The Tobermory
Terror) this unlikely Hebridean base was responsible for training
more than 1300 crews in 911 different ships in its five and a half
year life. Ships of all Allied nations attended but the predominance
was for RN ships - Flower Class and Black Swan Class etc. Does
anyone know where a list of the ships names which passed through
the course are held and if they are readily available? I David
is attempting to record all the participating vessels by name,
nationality and history. Their success was spectacular with more
than 90 U-Boats sunk and around 40 enemy aircraft destroyed. Contact

was the longest Cap Tally ever worn?'. He met a rating on the

cap
tally and it was on the smallest ship in the RN, HMS Knaresborough
Castle. Can anyone confirm this. Contact the Archivist
at Navy News.
