Bill is compiling a book of biographical details of those whose
names appear on the war memorial
at Newton Ferrers. One name is that of Plumber 1st Class William

aged 38. On that day the Duke of York was day-running from Scapa
Flow for gunnery exercises, and she returned to harbour at 2030.
The next entry in the log is “2040 Plumber WJ Littleton died

this stirs any memories amongst any of our more senior readers,
Bill would very much like to hear further details from you. Contact Bill

Ditty Boxes: Seeking the origins and history of
the 8”x10”x6” dovetailed pine ditty box?Chris
knows that they were in use in the Royal Navy, as well as the Royal
Canadian Navy, at least as early as the Great War up until the
early part of WW2 (c.1941) when they were superceded by the pressed
cardboard “valise.” On a recent visit to HMS Warrior
he was surprised to see a ditty box in an 1860’s setting.
Over the years he has contacted naval museums throughout Canada
and Great Britain seeking information but, thus far, not one curator
seems to have any background knowledge of these seemingly ubiquitous
boxes in their collections. It seems that they must have been made
to some officially-sanctioned specifications as every one ever
seen is exactly the same and, curiously, handmade. Chris would
like to know: -When did they first appear in service? -Were they
an issue item or purchased privately? -Who owned them? -By whom
were they made and where? -When did they cease to be made and used?
For some reason it seems to be one common artefact of naval life
that has never been studied and he would be grateful for any light
that you might shed on the subject.Conact Chris

HMS Dido: Does anyone know what happened to the ship's
bell of HMS Dido after the ship was sold to the NZ Navy and commissioned
as "HMSNZ Southland"? Enquiries with Naval authorities in Auckland,
NZ suggest that the bell did not accompany the sale of the ship.
This leads John to believe the bell may still be within the UK.
His father, George Webster, served on HMS Dido and John was christened
on the ship (circa 1963). He believes his name is the first entry
stamped on the bell. His father has since passed away and he would
very much like to acquire the bell as a keepsake. If you can help
contact John Webster
