Pingat
Jasa Malaysia (PJM): Derek served as a signaller with
the RM detachment on the previous HMS Bulwark's fourth commission
(1962-63), as a
result of which he qualifies for the Pingat Jasa Malaysia (PJM),
as does everyone else of the ship's company. He has calculated,
from "HMS Bulwark 1948 - 1984" by Ken Burns and Mike
Critchley (Maritime Books, 1986), that the "Rusty B" was
in Malaysian/Singaporean waters for an aggregate total of over
200 days from when I joined her on 31 Aug 61 (accommodated in HMS
Terror during her refit) ... easily meeting the qualifying criteria
for the PJM. He is having his PJM application processed by Mr Adrian
Rogers, the Queensland agent of the National Malaya and Borneo
Veterans Association U.K. (NM&BVA), and he will forward it
to the Malaysian authorities with evidence of my eligibility. I
have asked for confirmation of my calculations from MoD, but on
each occasion have been directed to the NM&BVA. This is in
contrast to the NZDF, who have a website outlining all RNZN ships
which were in the region for the required time. Hundreds of ex-members
of that commission's ship's company must have already successfully
applied for the PJM. Would anyone who has been able to obtain official
confirmation of Bulwark's aggregate time in Malaysian/ Singaporean
waters during her 1962-63 commission, Please send Derek a
copy, by e-mail.
