A MEMBER of the Royal Naval Association's Enfield branch, George Bristow, is a former Far East prisoner of war who is campaigning to secure compensation for survivors of the Japanese camps. George (79), who was a stoker mechanic in the Royal Navy, almost died through ill-treatment after being captured in Hong Kong when the Japanese invaded in 1941. He still suffers from the effects of the treatment meted out to him. Now he does all he can to promote the Royal British Legion's compensation campaign. Anyone wishing to support the campaign should write to: The Royal British Legion, 48 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5JY.

THE German and Italian navies are being invited to send representatives to the 55th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of the Atlantic at Londonderry in May. The invitations, sent in a spirit of reconciliation, have been sent out by Londonderry branch of the Royal Naval Association, who are organising the event. Londonderry was one of the main convoy ports in World War II, and all navies involved in the campaign are being invited, including the Irish Navy who as many Irishmen were killed in the battle. More details are available from co-organiser of the commemoration, Ken Kerr at the Services Club, 125 Spencer Road, Londonderry Tel. 01504 284188l
