HMS Adamant: I am trying to contact any member of the HMS Adamant Association. I am in the U.S. In 1971, I obtained at an antique sale a mug with an inscription of “HMS Adamant 1944”. The mug is made out of brass artillery shells of different calibres. The mug also has a coin and a button (I believe it is a Royal Navy clothing button). The large part of the mug is approximately 3 1/2” in diameter by 4 3/4” tall. Inscribed on the bottom is “75.1897.G” and “R.5.4.28” and two smaller symbols, one of which resembles a pineapple. The handle of the mug is approximately 3/4” in diameter and 4 1/4” tall. Inscribed on the bottom of the handle is “1943 W H 0.Z”. I would possibly like to donate this mug to the organization if this is something they would be interested in having. Contact Darrell LoPiccolo

Boxing: Angela is trying to find out any information about her grandfather, George Richard Wakeling. He was in the Royal Navy between about 1925 and 1935 and then he re-entered when WW2 broke out. He died in April 1940 when HMS Dunoon was blown up. She knows that he fought as a boxer whilst in the Navy and believes at one stage he may have won some sort of middleweight belt. He was known as Able Seaman Joe Wakeling. She would love to be able to speak to somebody who may have known him if there is anybody who is able to remember him. If this is not possible she would appreciate any information anybody can give, relating to him. Contact Angela Hardy

Herr Emil Capitaine 1862-1907: Researching the life and times of Herr C and wonders if any reader has anything about him or the vessels he was connected with? He came to England in 1904 and started work with Thornycroft at Chswick. He was engaged by W Beardmore on the Clyde where he was instrumental in fitting a 5 cylinder gas engine into an old RN Gunboat, HMS Rattler built in 1886. Rattler was a Bramble Class vessel, still afloat in 1922 as a training ship for HMS Dryad. If you have a print or any other details please contact TJM Keenan 8/05

HMS Calliope: William Isaac Thorndale was a sailor on this ship. His great grandson has his memoirs of his life in the navy 1875-1890 which make wonderful and fascinating reading, and which fired him with the desire to research his ship. He has created a website dedicated to the story of HMS Calliope’s miraculous escape from the hurricane at Apia, Samoa in March 1889. It can be found at http://homepages.tesco.net/scaramouche/ and has itself gotten him into contact with a few descendents of her crew and other interested parties from all over the globe. The site includes a list of all the ship’s company at Apia (well, it’s hopefully complete!). Whilst the public record has provided a wealth of data on six of Calliope’s midshipmen and their future careers (including Captain Frank Brandt on HMS Monmouth at Coronel 1914 and Rear Admiral the Honourable HLA Hood on HMS Invincible at Jutland 1916), he would dearly like to include on the site, tales of the other officers and most particularly the men, whose story from those times rarely seems to be told. Does anyone have any ancestors they might know of who served on the ship, to be included on the site? Equally, of course, any comments about the vessel itself would be welcome. Contact Graham Hague and I will reply to all enquiries.
