| HMS Richmond has continued her programme
in the Caribbean, visiting the Mexican island of Cozumel closely
followed by a short stop anchored off Belize.
In Cozumel the ship hosted a visit by Vice Admiral Juan
Saavedra, the equivalent of the Controller of the Navy, and
his staff.
Following initial discussions with Flag Officer Sea Training
staff earlier in the year, the Admiral was keen to witness
Royal Navy fire fighting and damage control techniques, and
the ship's team staged a practical demonstration for the
visitors. Cozumel also offered the opportunity for the many
scuba divers on board to dive in some of the clearest waters
in the world, as well as sample some genuine Mexican cuisine
and hospitality.
A day after leaving Cozumel the ship anchored off Belize
for a two-day visit before recommencing operations. Royally
looked after by the British Army Training Support Unit Belize
(BATSUB), the ship's company were able to enjoy a wide variety
of sporting and adventurous training activities during the
brief period. This included a football match against BATSUB
with the gratifying result Navy 6, Army 5.
South of Belize the ship undertook a day of gunnery on the
Seven Hills Range. During the day's practice, which involved
spotters from 148 Commando Battery, the ship's helicopter
and boats, and a helicopter from Army 227 Flight, 76 rounds
were fired ashore proving the ship's capability to provide
accurate Naval Fire Support. |
