HMS Richmond sails to assist with Hurricane Frances
07.09.04

HMS Richmond has cut short her visit to Barbados to assist the UK Overseas Territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands which was threatened by Hurricane Frances.

Having tracked the progress of the powerful Category 4 (of 5) hurricane for over a week, the decision was taken to sail the Ship as it became clear that the storm would pass within 50 miles of the low-lying islands.

In company with RFA Wave Ruler, sailed from Curacao, Richmond made fast passage across the Caribbean, arriving near the islands as winds and storm abated.

As local authorities assessed the situation, it became clear that the islands had a very lucky escape, with only minor damage to buildings and, most fortunately, no loss of life.

The Ship remains in the area as Frances proceeds through the Bahamas on its way to Florida, where residents have been evacuated from their homes in preparation for the hurricane.
