In a recent visit to the island
of St Vincent, HMS Richmond joined in with celebrations
to mark
the 25th Anniversary of the Island's Independence. This year
it was HMS Richmond’s honour to be able to join in
the parade and march, in what proved to be a most popular
festival.
The Ship's stay in the island was punctuated, however,
by frequent showers dispelling the myth that it is always
hot and sunny in the Caribbean!
One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to what used
to be the film set for the Hollywood production of the Pirates
of the Caribbean, filmed on location on the leeward side
of the island. Although some time has passed since filming
completed, some of the staging and buildings remain and the
area is also unusually free of any commercial activity to
capitalise on the attraction. Such was the success of the
film, and the setting, that the island expects to welcome
back the crew for the sequel in the near future.
The visit also gave the opportunity for the Governor General,
His Excellency Sir Frederick Ballantyne GCMG, to present
the LS&GC Medal to Leading Steward Watts.
