HMS Calliope: William Isaac Thorndale was a sailor on this ship. His great grandson has his memoirs of his life in the navy 1875-1890 which make wonderful and fascinating reading, and which fired him with the desire to research his ship. It can be found at http://homepages.tesco.net/scaramouche/ and has itself gotten him into contact with a few descendents of her crew and other interested parties from all over the globe. The site includes a list of all the ship’s company at Apia (well, it’s hopefully complete!). Whilst the public record has provided a wealth of data on six of Calliope’s midshipmen and their future careers (including Captain Frank Brandt on HMS Monmouth at Coronel 1914 and Rear Admiral the Honourable HLA Hood on HMS Invincible at Jutland 1916), he would dearly like to include on the site, tales of the other officers and most particularly the men, whose story from those times rarely seems to be told.
