| Navy News' traffic scheduling system |
For banner and micro button adverts
we use a traffic scheduling system that circulates your advert to
the particular pages you have requested (subject to availability)
at an even rate to ensure that your advert receives fair and equal
rotation. We use a system of Dynamic Rotation for our clients so that
adverts will remain visible on a particular page for a short duration
before changing. |
Sponsorship offers the chance to target
multiple marketing campaigns and show a range of products or services
you may have on offer. This will be in the form of a banner, which
is situated in the top on the right hand side of every 'news' story
page within the Navy News Online Web Site.
Each week an Email newsletter is sent to our opt-in database of
newsletter subscribers. At least three stories that have ben added
to Navy News
Online over the previous week are highlighted, with direct links
to the stories added.
The banner can either be provided by yourselves or designed for
you by the Navy News Online design team (an additional fee may
be charged
for these design services).
Two sponsorships offered are:
News - this is a great opportunity to be the exclusive advertiser
on over 900 news story pages.
News stories are added online daily, and cover the spectrum of Navy
business; it could be a Royal Navy warship involved in a dramatic
rescue on the high seas, an announcement about new ships or equipment,
a port visit in some exotic country or a reflection on some aspect
of the Navy's history.
These may be breaking stories which have not yet been in print, updates
of items which appear in the Navy News paper, or more detailed versions
of the printed text with a gallery of pictures.
Stories can be accessed through the home pages of our Navy News Online
and Young Readers sites. Every news story is archived and searchable
through our online Search facility.
Features and sport: Combined, these sections have over 200 pages.
Our features section provides a wealth of background information on all aspects
of the Royal Navy, perhaps following an expedition through the mountains and
jungles of Asia, or the anniversary of a particular historical event.
Picture specials are also produced on such diverse subjects as multinational
submarine rescue exercises, mine clearance work in the Baltic, and helicopter
operating trials.
Our sports section provides details of major Naval sporting events, including
Navy cup matches, Inter-Services tournaments and sporting tours to the four
corners of the Earth.

Rich Media
Flash/Shockwave |
Since not all browsers
support Flash/Shockwave, the banner code must be degradable and must
serve a backup GIF file.
Navy News Online does not allow banners to automatically download
plug-ins or ask the user to download plug-ins. Advertisers must provide
code that automatically recognizes whether or not the required plug-in
is installed. If the plug-in is not detected, a backup GIF should
be served.
Advertisers must not modify the Menu command in the html which specifies
what type of menu the viewer receives when right-clicking (Windows)
or command-clicking (Macintosh) the movie area in the browser, this
must be left to the default of True. Since click through locations
must be hard coded into flash movies, we cannot track click through
results on Flash/Shockwave. |
We can create or accept HTML code to
be placed in the banner space. Due to the differences in how Macintosh
and PC render pop-up menus and text entry fields, please allow extra
horizontal space so that they do not extend beyond their intended
width or height. |
Since not all browsers support Java,
and users can disable Java, the banner code must be degradable and
must serve a backup GIF file. |
We do not accept video formats. |
Audio banners are only permitted with
user interaction. The user must mouseover or click on the banner before
any sound is played. |

| Glossary |
| |
So we don't confuse you with unnecessary
jargon we have included in this pack a few of the words that you may
hear used when referring to the Internet |
A graphic image on a Web page that
links to a location of the advertiser's choice (e.g. the advertisers
Web site). Ad banners are currently the most popular type of online
advertisement. |
A specific advertising opportunity
on a Web site. Examples of ad products are banners, transition ads,
column ads, tickers and more. (See the ad type section). |
| Ad Requests (ad impressions) |
A request to a server to return an
ad to the appropriate Web page. The IAB issued proposed standards
using ad requests as the unit of measure for counting Web ads. |
A returned ad, by the server, to a
user each time they request a content page with an ad on it. |
An animation created by combining multiple
GIF images in one file. The result is multiple images, displayed one
after another, that give the appearance of movement. Research indicates
that animated banners are more effective than static banners, generating
higher ad awareness, recall, and click-through. |
The act of clicking a banner, or other
ad, which links the user to the location of the advertiser's choice
(typically the advertiser's Web site or email address). |
Percentage of clickthroughs
to total impressions. |
A file on a computer that records information
such as where the user has been on the Web. Some Web sites use cookies
to identify visitors to the site, enabling more personalized information
to be served upon return to the site. Users can prevent web sites
from assigning cookies by adjusting options with the client's browser. |
Printed text in an advertisement. |
The concept, design, and artwork in
an advertisement. |
Common characteristics used for population
segmentation. Typical demographic data points include age, gender,
postal code, and income. |
Delivery of ads on a rotating, random
basis so that consumers see different messages. Dynamic rotation also
gives the many ads a chance to appear on a page within a single visit
to the page. |
The process of selling products or
services via the Web. |
The number of times a person is exposed
to an ad. |
Graphics Interchange Format. The most
common file compression format for banner ads and most other pictures
on the Web, |
A server side event triggered by a
user's actions on a Web page. Although hits can be used to measure
traffic activity on a Web site, they are not the most reliable gauge
as one page with five graphic elements will register six hits when
viewed, while a page with no graphics will only register one hit. |
Text or graphics that has linking properties.
When a user clicks on hyper linked text or graphics, the user is transported
to another location of content either on the same page or another
page. |
| Impressions (ad requests) |
An impression is the industry term
for delivering an ad of a Web page. Technically, an impression is
a call from the ad engine to the ad server to return an advertisement
graphic. |
| JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) |
A graphics file format (similar to
GIF), which is used more for photographs and other images containing
many colours and shading. |
The number of times users request a
page that may contain a specific ad. |
The process of integrating an advertisers
message with Web content on an exclusive basis. Examples of this are
transitions ads with "brought to you by" messages, consistent
co-branding of a section of content with the advertiser's icon "sponsored
by..." . |
Advertisements that do not change while
you are visiting a page. Next time you revisit the page you will see
another advert. This allows for longer exposure to the message. |
The process of delivering the best
possible ad to the user through content matching, proofing, or filtering. |
The number of people who come to a
Web site. |
Uniform Resource Locator. The unique,
identifying address of any particular page on the Web. |
A place on the Internet or Web. The
term Web site refers to the all-encompassing body of information as
a whole, for a particular domain name. A place made up of web pages. |
