VICTORY in the Falklands and the future of naval aviation will be the themes of this year’s Yeovilton Air Day.
Organisers of the popular show have invited four French Super Etendard fighters – scourge of the task force fleet in Argentine hands in 1982 – to take part in the July 7 display at the Somerset air base.
The future of naval aviation will be represented by Future Lynx (the updated version of the standard helicopter for frigates and destroyers) and by the Joint Strike Fighter, represented both in model form and through interactive displays.
One of the legendary aircraft of maritime aviation will be making its debut at the show. Kennet Aviation’s Supermarine Seafire returned to the air for the first time in five decades last year. Lovingly restored, this naval version of the great Spitfire will perform for the first time at Yeovilton.
Vintage aircraft from the RN Historic Flight will also be in the air: the Sea Fury, Sea Hawk and the Fairey Swordfish are all lined up to perform on home ‘turf’.
Foreign visitors to the show will include the Patrouille Suisse, the Swiss Air Force’s aerobatic display team in their Northrop Tiger II jet fighters.
Not wishing to be outdone, the RAF’s Red Arrows will once again put on a show for the crowds.
And also not wishing to be outdone will be the Commando Helicopter Force, based at Yeovilton.
Each year air day closes with the impressive commando assault – a combined air and ground attack by the combined forces of the Fleet Air Arm, RAF, Army Air Corps and Royal Marines.
Ticket prices range between £3 for children to £16 for adults (in advance) or £5 to £20 (on the day).
Wearers of the MOD’s Veteran’s Badge, the South Atlantic Medal 1982 and the UK Merchant Seafarers Veterans Badge will be entitled to discounts.
